Chapter Six

Jasmin was sure of one thing. She decided she was a heck of a lot more comfortable interviewing people than being the interviewee. Particularly when the interviewer in question was half-naked and looking at her as though she were the hottest woman in the history of the universe.

Oh, come on, she thought, and rolled her eyes heavenward. I’m probably not even the hottest woman in the history of my bridge club.

Of course, she figured that just about everything about this situation was pretty darned surreal. Sure, she’d visited Port Emerald Beach on any number of occasions. Yet, never had the skies and the waters beneath them shone such a bright, brilliant blue, both illuminated by the gold of a sun that drenched both in its ebullient rays. And best of all was her companion—a man that himself seemed an extension of nature.

All the more beautiful in natural light, Dane’s long, cinnamon-brown hair and bronzed, carved face shone all the more on the nature-borne stage that was Port Emerald Beach, and today he also displayed the most gorgeous body she had ever seen.

Dressed only in a tight ruby-red Speedo that seemed to conceal some ample endowments, Dane showed in full a massive, bronzed chest and flawless washboard abs. His body, Jasmin noted, seemed the ideal completion for the beauty of his form, and she further admired his massive shoulders and the strong, firm arms that had held her the evening before.

His concentration, in turn, seemed reserved for the words that flowed forth from the lips of the woman before him. And, as they shared a refreshing picnic lunch of watermelon, scarlet-red cherries, juicy pineapple, and gold-pealed bananas that Dane had picked himself from a place he identified as his own private cove, he regaled her with questions about her life and career.

“So tell me how you first became interested in writing?” he prompted, probing her with a dreamy-eyed stare.

Jasmin shrugged. “Growing up in Port Emerald, I saw so much beauty around me, I knew I had to capture it some way,” she told him, making a broad gesture outward to encompass the bronzed sands, tall sable palms, and silk-feathered seabirds that filled and adorned their surroundings. “I’ve written poetry and fiction since I could pick up a pen. But in high school, when I snagged a post at the school newspaper, I knew I had found my true calling. I wrote an editorial about the need for a cleanup day at this very beach. The next weekend, nearly 100 students, along with their parents, relatives, and friends, showed up to help me clean the sands.”

She fell silent as her wide-eyed date laid his strong hands on her arms, drawing her forward to grace her lips with a warm, sweet kiss.

“I remember that day,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “After seeing the way that some of the beachcombers treated the birds and animals on the beach and the manner in which some of them soiled the sands with their trash and papers, I had begun to lose faith in humans.
